How Iodine affects aging

Supplementing becomes relevant for vegans, dairy avoiders, and anyone cooking only with sea salt, which carries almost no iodine — potassium iodide at 150mcg covers the RDA. Pregnancy raises the need to 220mcg, which is why most prenatal vitamins now include it. Be wary of kelp supplements: their iodine content varies enormously and can reach thousands of micrograms per dose.

The tolerable upper limit is 1,100mcg daily, but people with autoimmune thyroid disease can react to far less — excess iodine can trigger both hypo- and hyperthyroidism in susceptible individuals. If you have Hashimoto's, thyroid nodules, or take thyroid medication, talk to your doctor before adding any iodine supplement. Is kelp a safe way to get iodine?
